Suzuki made and designed the Savage engine. They are professionals who have spent time and effort to work out the best oil to use.
To quote from the owners manual: Use premiun 4-stroke motor oil. Use oil with viscosity rating SAE 10W-40. Use oil rated SE or SF under the API classification.
This advice is repeated in the Clymer manual. Oil rating information is printed on the bottle the oil comes in.
20-50 oil my be OK for the Savage, but 10W-40 is perfect. And don't even think of using oil additives.
Using different oil won't make the engine last any longer. Same goes for changing the oil more regularly than recommended for no good reason - Suzuki recommend every 3500 miles.
One final thing - I've got a '93 5-speed Savage and all I've written is correct for that bike. If for some reason Suzuki have changed their recommendations for the '03 Savage, please ignore all the oil ratings; but the basic advice holds true - use the oil that Suzuki recommend.
Happy Savage riding - even the ones with oil different to what Suzuki recommend!!
